Markets drew a challenging start to 2022. An optimistic January quickly gave way to meager demand for both equity and fixed income products. New fundraising hit a three-year low. Many product development plans were aborted, but some managers were able to pivot to maintain some semblance of momentum.
As firms contend with their respective hurdles, two overarching developments will bring their own impact: imminent inclusion of mutual funds into the commercial pension pilot program, and updated FMC regulations from CSRC. Both call for scrutiny by foreign managers honing and executing China plays.
